2026 Declared the Era of the Croaking Craze.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these amphibious creatures. Given that a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are staking their claim.
From Classic Icons to Modern Mania
Frogs are far from new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. However, their visibility has noticeably exploded in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are serious titles centered on frogs.
A Data-Driven Dive
To quantify this phenomenon, I undertook a detailed review into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's rising status in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat evident elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. Yet, the wave in gaming looks uniquely strong.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
Honestly, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess natural creative potential for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues facilitate a host of creative gameplay ideas.
Several the showcased games directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year so far.
When these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be witnessing a true croaking cultural moment.
