Former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey Files Innocent Plea to Accusations of Misleading US Legislators
Ex- FBI director James the former director has entered an innocent plea to making false statements to lawmakers and obstructing a congressional proceeding.
The former director's attorney filed the response representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on mid-week.
Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would seek to have the legal matter thrown out for several reasons including that his client, a detractor of Donald Trump, was being targeted.
The former director was indicted just days after the former president urged his top legal official to take action against him.
Court Developments
In court on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative informed the magistrate they planned to present multiple petitions to terminate the proceedings before a legal hearing, arguing the government's case was spiteful and that a government lawyer was wrongfully assigned to take over the proceedings.
James Comey's case was initially handled by Erik Siebert, who resigned under influence from Trump after his investigation into another opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - was unable to file indictments.
Courtroom Atmosphere
Mr Comey appeared in good spirits as he walked into the court on Wednesday, speaking with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was joined by his partner, Patrice Failor and child Maureen Comey, a government attorney who the previous administration recently fired.
Upon hearing to the court state his rights and the dual charges against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, Mr Comey was asked if he understood the charges.
"Yes your honour. Thank you," he told the proceedings.
Previous Events
James Comey was the head of the FBI from four years and was terminated about four months into Trump's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the period, he was leading an examination into Russian election interference and whether there were any links between Moscow and the presidential campaign.
During his tenure, James Comey sparked a backlash from Democrats when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was probing presidential nominee Clinton's use of a private email server. Indictments against Hillary Clinton were never brought, leading to criticism from conservative politicians as well.
Present Charges
Government attorneys allege Mr Comey lied to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They allege he provided false information to the Senate by saying he had not permitted a person at the Federal Bureau of Investigation to disclose to journalistic entities information about the agency probes.
Prosecutors also allege James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, hinder and slow" the legislative group by giving misleading testimony to it.
Personal Comments
Via social media the former director shared to his Instagram after he was accused, he stated he was not guilty and alleged Trump of conducting himself like a "tyrant".
"We have been aware for years that there are consequences to challenging the former president," he said. "We choose not to live on our bended knee."
"I have done nothing wrong," he stated further. "Therefore proceed with a court case."
These allegations against Mr Comey came after Donald Trump shared on social media demanding his top legal official, Pam Bondi, take legal action against the former director and additional individuals.
