JP Morgan Demands Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Corporate HQ Access

The banking leader has told staff members working at its new headquarters in Manhattan that they must share their biometric data to enter the high-value building.

Move from Discretionary to Compulsory

The financial firm had originally envisioned for the registration of employee biometrics at its new high-rise to be voluntary.

However, workers of the US's largest bank who have commenced employment at the main office since August have received electronic messages stating that biometric access was now "compulsory".

Understanding the Biometric System

Biometric access demands staff to scan their hand geometry to enter entry points in the lobby instead of swiping their access passes.

Building Specifications and Capacity

The corporate tower, which allegedly cost three billion dollars to build, will eventually serve as a home for thousands of staff members once it is entirely staffed before year-end.

Safety Justification

The financial company opted not to respond but it is assumed that the implementation of physical identifiers for admission is created to make the facility more secure.

Alternative Access Methods

There are special provisions for certain staff members who will continue to have the option to use a traditional pass for admission, although the requirements for who will utilize more traditional ID access remains unspecified.

Supporting Mobile Applications

In addition to the deployment of palm and eye scanners, the bank has also released the "Corporate Access" smartphone application, which functions as a digital badge and center for staff resources.

The platform enables staff to coordinate external entry, use indoor maps of the premises and arrange in advance meals from the building's 19 food service providers.

Security Context

The introduction of tighter entry controls comes as American companies, notably those with substantial activities in NYC, look to strengthen protection following the attack of the CEO of one of the leading healthcare providers in July.

The executive, the boss of UnitedHealthcare, was fatally shot not far from JP Morgan's offices.

Additional Office Considerations

It is uncertain if JP Morgan aims to deploy biometric access for staff at its branches in other important economic centers, such as the UK capital.

Broader Workplace Monitoring Trends

The action comes amid discussion over the implementation of technology to observe staff by their companies, including monitoring physical presence metrics.

In recent months, all JP Morgan workers on flexible arrangements were told they must return to the physical location on a daily basis.

Leadership Viewpoint

The bank's chief executive, the prominent banker, has described the bank's state-of-the-art 60-storey headquarters as a "beautiful physical manifestation" of the organization.

The banker, one of the world's most powerful bankers, this week warned that the chance of the US stock market crashing was far greater than many financiers anticipated.
